JUSTICE AND INTERNATIONAL LAW

IN A GLOBAL WORLD

General Director:

Emmanuelle TOURME-JOUANNET

Professor of Public Law at Sorbonne Law School

The project's aim is to reconsider some contemporary matters of International Law, by recognizing evolutions of law and justice related to post-Cold War globalization and therefore, the advent of a global world. It includes several research topics, which are discussed from a comparative, interdisciplinary and critical point of view. The critical point of view is particularly important insofar as since the project members will not yield to readymade appreciations of the discipline's ordinary thought, which sometimes leads the profession to ascertain only simple assumptions in international Law.

Therefore, it is a question of reconsidering them and of subjecting them to the free examination of all participants coming from different areas of the world, different cultures and different disciplines, in order to support the production of alternative and creative legal solutions which can renew internationalists' imagination and the contemporary legal view. This considering, senior members of the international team are mobilized for this research program and are also invited to discuss their research with their PhD and Master students. In addition to annual conferences and workshops attached to the topics of the program, spring and summer seminars for PhD students will be organized to this en, at Paris 1 University.

The project includes seven principal research axes:

I. "Forgotten Voices" Program

II. Legal Humanism Program : A Critical Humanism

(in partnership with the UMR de droit comparé of Paris 1 University and Professor Hélène RUIZ FABRI)

III. Law and Development Program

IV. Contemporary Doctrine(s) of International Law

V. Global History of International Law

VI. Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Situations

VII. New Contemporary Forms of Normativity

VII. Programme of Translegal, Feminist and Gender Studies

AGENDA

Emmanuelle Tourme-Jouannet is now co-editor in chief of the Journal of History of International Law / Revue d'histoire du droit international (with Anne Peters and Peter Haggenmacher).

The object of the Journal of the History of International Law/Revue d'histoire du droit international is to contribute to the effort to make intelligible the international legal past, however varied and eccentric it may be, to stimulate interest in the whys, the whats and wheres of international legal development, without projecting present relationships upon the past, and to promote the application of a sense of proportion to the study of current international legal problems. The aim of the Journal is to open fields of inquiry, to enable new questions to be asked, to be awake to and always aware of the plurality of human civilizations and cultures, past and present, and to maintain an appreciation of patterns of cultural flow and interaction that centrally affect international law and its development.

Without abandoning chronology and contextualization, which provide the essential framework within which laws and legal events make sense, the Journal of the History of International Law/Revue d'histoire du droit international aims to publish articles, essays and comments on thematic lines as well. By encouraging different methods of approaching the subject it is thought that new light will be cast upon familiar and not so familiar aspects of international law, including private international law.
