Master: University Diploma in Mathematical Methods, Economics & Finance (MMEF)

First Year of Graduate Studies

The first year of graduate studies MMEF - Mathematical Methods in Economics and Finance is a University Diploma ("Diplôme d'Université" - DU). MMEF is an international program entirely taught in English which lasts one academic year and awards between 60 and 71 educational credits that include either a research project or an internship.

The University Diploma MMEF corresponds to a first-year level of second cycle qualifications according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) - Bologna Process.

MMEF is devoted to the training of students in the use of mathematical models in economics and finance: mathematical economics, strategic analysis, decision theory, stochastic models, mathematical finance and optimization models. Moreover the program offers an intensive French as foreign language training.

The training is built around a large spectrum of courses, which aim to give the knowledge for the modelization of economic and financial problems, for mathematical formalization and tools for the numerical solutions. The new models in finance, economics and decision theory need a coherent training in these fields.

Around 50 students are welcomed each year. Admission is made on the basis of academic excellence. All applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English and have a recognized Bachelor Degree or equivalent (180 ECTS credits in the Bologna system). Preference is given to students in economics, finance or mathematics. Mathematical aptitude and work experience can be helpful.

Continuation in QEM Erasmus Mundus Master

After the University Diploma MMEF successful students who want to get a Masters Degree may apply for:

  • the QEM1, the first year (QEM1) of The Erasmus Mundus Master course, QEM - Models and Methods of Quantitative Economics in the academic year following the one in which you graduated from the MMEF program; or
  • the accelerated track that corresponds to joining the first year of the Erasmus Mundus Master course, QEM - Models and Methods of Quantitative Economics, in January of the academic year in which you are enrolled in MMEF program. For that you must take and pass the final exams of the courses of the Economics track organised during the first week of December of the academic year in which you are enrolled in MMEF program

After having successfully completed the QEM program, the students may enter one of the PhD Programs that Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is involved in.

The competition within the QEM is very high; only 30% of MMEF students were accepted to the QEM Erasmus Mundus Master on the basis of academic excellence.

Our past experience with previous MMEF students attending the QEM shows that the intensive courses in math with applications in Economics and Finance, allows for success in the QEM.

Students that are selected for the accelerated track have the possibility of spending the Summer Semester in one of the following QEM Partner Universities: Universität Bielefeld, Université catholique de Louvain, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne or Università Ca' Foscari Venezia.

Continuation in a French Master Degree

After the University Diploma MMEF students may apply for a Master M2 (second year) of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Most of the MMEF students apply for the following Master M2 programs of UFR27:

Mathematical Models and Methods in Economics and Finance - MMMEF

Risk Ingineering: Finance and Insurance - IRFA

Futhermore MMEF students may apply for Master M2 programs from other academic institutions  that recognize the equivalence in order to pursue their studies in France.

Application Schedule:

  • November 15th 2017 Start of the application procedure for the MMEF program starting September 1st 2018
  • July 10th 2018 End of the application procedure for the MMEF program starting September 1st 2018
