First year of M.A.


The first year of the M.A. degree aims at providing skills running across all fields of Cultural heritage studies, especially in methodology (UE 1), while offering students the opportunity to get specialized in a particular domain of world history, archaeology or art history (UE2 ), benefitting from the very large number of courses proposed by both Departments of History (UFR 09) and Art History and Archaeology (UFR 03), from Prehistory to today's world.





Methodology courses include :

  • History and management of cultural heritage
  • Cultural heritage laws
  • Conservation principles
  • Management of archaeological research
  • Movie cultural heritage
  • Museums and museography
  • Antiquity today


History, Archaeology and art history courses include :


  • Prehistoric and Protohistoric archaeology
  • Arts and archaeology of Africa, America, and Oceania
  • History, archaeology and art history of Classical and Oriental Antiquity
  • History, archaeology and art history of Medieval Europe
  • History and art history of Modern Europe
  • History and art history of the contemporary world
  • History of the movie industry
  • History of architecture


Students will be requested to do an internship or a laboratory traineeship for a total duration of 175 hours (5 weeks). This traineeship is supposed to be done beyond teaching time, and preferably during the summer preceding the start of the academic year.


Students will be requested to write an essay (M.A. thesis) under the supervision of a scholar (research director) chosen from one of the two Departments of History (UFR 09) or Art history and archaeology (UFR 03). This essay will be presented and discussed publicly. With the agreement of the research director, the M.A. thesis can be written in English (with a summary in French).
