Foreign language courses

Speaking three or four languages is nowadays an evidence for every people who wants to specialise in international relations. At the magistère, an English course is compulsory during the three years. A good English skill is needed to enter the training. Applicants must pass an English test during the admission interview.

A second language learning is also compulsory. In the magistère, four languages are taught: German, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.

Second language learning is in small groups, streamed in three levels: newbie, intermediate, advanced.

Finally, students can study a third language, which is highly recommended if he or she has a good level in the two first languages.

If students want to learn, as second or third language, a language that is not included in the training (Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Swahili, for example), two alternatives are recommended:

  • Students can attend the courses given by the language department of the University Paris I, at the Pierre-Mendès France center
  • Students can attend courses at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (INALCO). As there is a graduation at the end of the course, independent from the magistère, the schedule is slightly heavier.

In both cases, the performances of these courses will appear on the MRIAE marks reports.

The syllabus includes language practice, and knowledge about civilisation. Indeed, the language classes aim to learn students more about the political systems and cultures of same speaking language countries. Taking into account the vocational training of the MRIAE, the objective for students is to be able to provide analysis of economic, political and social subjects in the language studied.

Trainings in foreign countries and the possibility of University exchanges also allow students to deepen their knowledge of a country.
