Institut d'Etude du Développement Economique et Social

General Presentation

- The Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development was founded in 1957 and is part of Paris 1.

An advantage of this institute is the autonomous status it enjoys within the university. It provides a meeting place and the impetus for the study and teaching of social sciences in the field of development, through analysis of different experiences, discussion of the relative merits of opposing interpretations, presentation of social projects and policy.

This is done at local, regional, national and international levels, in the light of the practical constraints that may exist.

There are one academic and six vocational postgraduate degrees based on an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach. The courses are open to French and foreign students.

Research is carried out by the Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development Research Centre (CRI).

Publications include the Tiers-Monde Collection and the Tiers-Monde Review.

The Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development has signed international cooperation agreements with many universities in countries from Africa and Latin America and supports projects set up by international organisations (UNESCO). The Institute is part of a number of scientific networks involving countries with different standards of living who are currently restructuring their economic systems or finding their place in the world system.

The Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development is housed on the Nogent sur Marne campus and works in collaboration with the CIRAD, the CIRED, the IRD, the CEDIMES and the INRA.
