General presentation

 

When the University of Paris 1 was created, two departments were set up, one specialising in Economics, the other in Business Management.

 

 

The Economics Department of the University of Paris 1 is the largest economics department in France, in terms of:

 

  • the number of students, about 3,800 in all: 1,400 are enrolled in the first two years of undergraduate study, 1,000 in the third and fourth years, 600 in postgraduate taught courses and 800 in PhD programmes;
  • the number of academic and research staff: 90 full-time and 30 part-time;
  • the quality of its research centres : the Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne comprises research teams in various fields of economic theory and applied economics ;
  • the number and variety of courses offered: - a three-year course in Economics and Management, majoring in economics, the so-called Licence; - three joint courses in Geography and Economics, Law and Economics and Sociology and Economics; - three specific third and fourth year courses in Econometrics (the "economic technics" IUP, the "international trade" MST, the prestigious Magistère); - seven separate Master's programmes with more than 20 specialities; - some of these programmes are jointly organised through the Paris School of Economics.

 

This great variety of courses is exceptional. After the first two years, which all students have to follow, the broad choice of degree courses prepares students for careers in a large number of fields. Surveys show that a degree in economics opens the door to many professions. This is because the courses are both general and specialised, theoretical and practical, purely economics-oriented or open to other disciplines. Graduates can go on to become economics teachers and researchers; find employment in international organisations, in consultancy firms; work at executive level for public administrations or in private businesses, mainly in the tertiary sector.

 

As they pursue their studies, students can gradually specialise, in line with their academic abilities and personal preferences.
