- The 1969 university reform and the restructuring of the University of Paris led to the creation of a new branch of higher education specialising in art education and research in humanities applied to the arts.
Right from the outset, the new University Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) set up a department specialising in the arts.
The first national degree in the Arts was created in 1970, followed two years later by degrees in Aesthetics and in the Art Sciences. Degrees in Cultural Studies and the Performing Arts appeared in 1984, and in 1985 a degree in Applied Arts was introduced.
The five specialisations form an artistic and cultural ensemble that examines the relationship between art and creation, art and artworks, art and artists, art and society, and art and the general public.
3000 students are enrolled in the Arts Department, whose staff include 80 academics and researchers, 100 artists and other professionals from the world of art and culture, and 15 administrative and secretarial staff.
- Goals:
Since the beginning, the Arts Department has developed an original approach combining both the theory and the practice of art.
Creation, design, production, reflection and research are all seen in the context of contemporary debate and the use of the most recent technologies.
Research in the domain is carried out at different levels: fourth year degree dissertations, fifth year postgraduate degree dissertations, the Graduate School, and seven research centres. Every year over 100 dissertations are presented and 30 doctoral and other theses are defended.
Members of the research centres are editors of a number of learned journals or are series editors of certain publications. They also organise individual and group exhibitions.
- Career prospects:
Whatever the specialisation and whatever the level at which students graduate there are different job opportunities. An Arts degree leads to careers in the arts and in teaching, in particular through the special courses to prepare candidates for art teaching qualifications. A degree in the Performing Arts leads to work in films, radio and television. A degree in Cultural Studies prepares students for work in art management and project design; an Applied Arts degree leads to work in design. Last but not least, a degree in Aesthetics prepares students for careers in teaching or as art critics.
- Degrees:
The five specialisations of the Arts Department lead to 20 degrees after two, three, four or five years of study. All students who have a postgraduate degree can apply to do a doctorate in the Arts and Art Sciences.
