Body, Technology & Society

The researchers exploring this theme are working on various fields such as death (palliative care, cremation), medical robotics, medical imagery, virtual autopsy, telemedicine, automation in aeronautics. Through these case studies we revisit Marcel Mauss’s notion of the body as a « physical site » - with its stuff and flesh - in which social values are inscribed and transmitted. However, in keeping with Georges Balandier’s dynamical approach to society, we aim at exploring the new socio-technological worlds shaping contemporary bodies.  Human bodies are both physical sites and symbolic sites in which societies express their view of what is human.

In our view the material and cognitive dimensions of the body have to be explored by socioanthropologists with a multidisciplinary approach, including natural and social sciences, as well as ergonomy, engineering, biology and medicine.
