HORIZONS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
February 6th and 7th, 2014, Auditorium of the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, Paris
Closing Conference of the“Atelier de Réflexion Prospective” (ARP) "New stakes for cultural Heritage"
January 2013 – March 2014
THE PA.TER.MONDI CONSORTIUM (HERITAGE, TERRITORY, GLOBALIZATION)
The PA.TER.MONDI Foresight Workshop (FW) is a multidisciplinary consortium bringing together sixty researchers and heritage experts. Fields of anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, history, information science, philosophy and architecture (restoration, conservation, heritage architecture) are represented with an additional cross-cutting digital dimension (see the consortium presentation brochure).
The objective of the FW is to take a prospective look at the evolution of cultural heritage and its challenges (economic, societal and cultural) in order to understand the needs of the research addressing these future possibilities.
From January 2013 to March 2014, using a systemic and dynamic approach, the FW set out to define and propose emerging themes on cultural heritage to The French National Research Agency (ANR) to guide future research and design calls for projects.
THE CONSORTIUM WORKING METHOD
Prospective thinking is a cognitive process whose objective is to understand possible futures. The PA.TER.MONDI foresight workshop used the prospective meta-method consisting of three distinct cognitive stages: understanding, imagination and proposition of actions. The approach was structured according to the three steps of the classic triptych of prospective work: Understanding, Imagining and Proposition-making.
Phase 1: UNDERSTANDING
Diagnostic phase designed to systematically and dynamically understand present and past trends.
Phase of exploration of potential futures and development of desirable futures through problematization.
Phase 3: PROPOSITION-MAKING
Collective phase of presentation and discussion of the results to develop recommendations and guidelines.
At the end of the prospective process, the foresight workshop developed guidelines for research on cultural heritage. The initial phases of the six working groups (WG) were mixed and recast into three synthetic themes, Relation(s), Mobility/Circulations(s) and Value(s), making it possible to bring together the progress of the WG in a transversal manner.
3 themes: RELATION(S), MOBILITY/CIRCULATION(S) and VALUE(S)
THE CONFERENCE “THE HORIZONS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE”
The objective of the colloquium is to present the progress made by the FW consortium PA.TER.MONDI; to communicate widely on prospective research topics identified; to compare them with approaches of other researchers and heritage professionals; to present these to the view of international research to provide the opportunity for exchange and debate.
It is organized into four sessions: an introductory half-day (specific issue, methodology and general framework) and three half-days on the synthetic themes (RELATIONS, MOBILITY and VALUE). For each of the three themed sessions, two keynote speakers from outside the consortium will introduce the themes through their respective fields of study. A round table discussion hosted by two researchers of the PA.TER.MONDI consortium will present the progress made and results of the consortium for each of the three themes. The debate will then be opened to the participants of the round table.
Lectures and discussions will be posted on the conference website.
